Second Draft Hong Kong: An Honest Review of Tai Hang’s Best Local Craft Beer Pub

There were a few places I knew I had to visit while planning my Hong Kong trip. One of them was Second Draft, a craft beer pub that started in the trendy neighborhood of Tai Hang and has since relocated to Causeway Bay. It started getting some attention among Korean travelers after being featured on a TV show, but it’s truly a local favorite, loved for its cool atmosphere and incredible beer lineup.

We made sure to visit Second Draft during our trip to Hong Kong. After a satisfying Peking duck dinner, we headed to their current location in Causeway Bay’s Fashion Walk.

Green Tiles and a Vibrant Local Vibe

We visited late at night, and the pub was filled with locals winding down their day under cozy, dim lighting. The atmosphere was buzzing yet comfortableโ€”it was just perfect. The signature look of the place has to be the wall of endless beer taps set against a backdrop of gorgeous green tiles. I honestly found myself thinking, “I wish I could just pick up this entire pub and move it to my neighborhood.”

I’ve heard it has a different vibe during the day, but the local, late-night energy was incredibly charming. If you want to escape the tourist crowds and experience a real Hong Kong night, I can’t recommend Second Draft enough.

It was a bit dark since we visited at night, but you could still feel its signature hip atmosphere. I hear it’s just as charming during the daytime!

A Funky Discount System: Higher ABV, Bigger Discount?

As we looked at the menu, we discovered something really interesting. The higher the alcohol percentage (ABV) of the beer, the bigger the discount. It was a fascinating system I’d never seen in Korea, and my friend and I spent a good while marveling at it as we chose our drinks.

With such a wide variety of craft beers, it can be hard to choose. But if you tell the staff what kind of flavors or aromas you like, they’re happy to give you a recommendation. We had already eaten, so we just grabbed a beer each, but I heard their food menu is quite popular during the day. They also serve coffee and wine, so it’s a great spot to visit even if someone in your group doesn’t drink alcohol.

Our Beer Order: An Honest Taste Test

After much deliberation, we ordered a Bitter Oak (M) and a Cereusly (M).

Cereusly (M / 67 HKD): This was an American IPA. The moment I took a sip, I was hit with an incredible burst of tangy grapefruit bitterness and a full, hoppy aroma. If you’re an IPA fan, you will absolutely love this.

Bitter Oak (M / 63 HKD): As the name suggests, I was expecting a strong oaky scent, but it was much subtler than I anticipated, which was a little disappointing for me personally. Still, it was a smooth and easy-drinking beer.

If we weren’t so full, I would have definitely ordered a beer flight to sample a few different kinds. I’m already planning to try a flight on my next visit.

Bitter Oak is above, Cereusly is below. You can see the difference in color! If you like a bitter IPA, I definitely recommend the Cereusly.

The bill for our two beers came to a total of 143 HKD including tax, which is about $18.50 USD. Considering the cost of living in Hong Kong, I’d say the price was pretty reasonable.

We really enjoyed our time at Second Draft and ended the night by taking a walk around the vibrant Causeway Bay area. If you want to enjoy Hong Kong’s excellent craft beer scene with a local vibe, Second Draft is an excellent choice.
